Diplomatic Correspondent | Dhaka Bangladesh's National Security Adviser (NSA) Khalilur Rahman arrived in Washington on Wednesday for a crucial five-day visit, amid new pressures from the Trump administration regarding remittances, visas, and travel restrictions. The visit is seen as a major diplomatic move ahead of Bangladesh's upcoming general election scheduled for next month.

Key Issues on the Agenda:

Democratic Transition & Elections: A top priority of this visit is to discuss the political landscape and the progress of the democratic transition in Bangladesh with U.S. officials before the February polls.

Trade and Tariffs: The NSA will review the outcomes of ongoing discussions on reciprocal tariffs and explore ways to further strengthen bilateral trade ties.

Visa Bonds and Travel Restrictions: Discussions will also address the recent U.S. policy requiring "visa bonds" (financial deposits) for Bangladeshi travelers, which has created new challenges for citizens.

High-Level Meetings: During his stay, Khalilur Rahman is expected to meet with U.S. Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker, Assistant Secretary Paul Kapoor, and Special Envoy Sergio Gor. A separate meeting is scheduled with Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Brendan Lynch. Additionally, the NSA may attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent Christensen, who is expected to arrive in Dhaka on January 12.
