The United States has issued another stern warning to Iran as anti-government protests and violence spread across the country. U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is prepared to authorize military action if the situation deteriorates further.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, January 9, Trump said Iran is facing a “major crisis.” He claimed that protesters are taking control of cities in ways that were unimaginable just a few weeks ago. Videos circulating on social media show widespread protests and clashes in multiple Iranian cities.

In an effort to control the situation, Iranian authorities have shut down internet access across the country. Trump further warned, “If they start shooting, we will shoot back.” He also expressed concern for the safety of the protesters.

According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, at least 62 people have been killed since the protests began on December 28. Among the deceased are 14 security personnel and 48 protesters. State television in Iran has broadcast images of clashes and arson in various locations.

Earlier, in a televised address to the nation, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described the protests as “terrorist acts” and blamed the United States for instigating them. He warned of a tough response against protesters.

Meanwhile, tensions have also spread to Kurdish and Baloch-majority regions, including Tehran. The government has stated that strict measures will be taken against violent demonstrations.
