"Begum Khaleda Zia Carried the Torch of Democracy Until the End," says Amir Khosru
BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has hailed the late former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia as a symbol of resistance, stating that she carried the "torch of democracy" throughout her life. He emphasized that her legacy is defined by her steadfast stance against hegemony and her refusal to compromise with autocratic forces.
Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion and prayer session organized by the Zia Parishad at the National Press Club on Wednesday (January 7), Khosru paid tribute to the BNP Chairperson’s life and political struggle.
"A Leader of Principles" Khosru highlighted that while many other political figures compromised with dictators like Ershad for personal gain, Khaleda Zia remained unshakable. "She spent only a fraction of her life in power; the rest was dedicated to movements and struggles. She gave the nation courage," Khosru remarked. He further noted that her refusal to yield during the 1/11 political crisis cemented her status as an "uncompromising leader."
Vision for the Future The BNP leader also credited Khaleda Zia for pioneering initiatives in women's empowerment and agricultural development. Referring to the massive turnout at her funeral, he said, "Millions didn't gather by chance; it was a reflection of the profound love and respect the people had for her."
Looking ahead, Khosru urged party activists to work towards the "economic democracy" outlined by BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. He called for a partnership-based governance model where the fruits of development reach every citizen, promising that the party remains committed to building a new, democratic Bangladesh.
