Popular Chrome Extensions Accused of Secretly Collecting AI Chat Data
Two widely used browser extensions available on the Google Chrome Web Store have been accused of secretly collecting users’ AI chatbot conversations, raising serious privacy concerns. Cybersecurity firm OX Security reported that nearly 900,000 users may have been affected.
The extensions—ChatGPT for Chrome with GPT-5, Claude Sonnet & DeepSeek AI and AI Sidebar with DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Claude and more—were found to periodically gather browser tab URLs and full chat conversations with AI tools, transmitting the data to external servers.
Security analysts described the practice as “prompt poaching.” Experts warn that the exposed data could be exploited for fraud, identity theft, or espionage. Users have been advised to remove the extensions and remain cautious when installing browser add-ons.v
