According to the traditional proverb, the most biting cold arrives in the month of Magh. However, this year, the extreme chill of winter has taken hold well before that, during the month of Poush.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported today, Thursday, January 8, that a cold wave is currently sweeping over 24 districts across the country.Data from the BMD indicates that this cold wave may persist for several more days. Meteorologists suggest that there is no immediate prospect of the situation returning to normal quickly.Regarding the duration, meteorologist Md. Shahinul Islam stated that the ongoing cold wave could last for more than a week. During this period, some new districts may be added to the cold wave's coverage, while others might temporarily move out of it. However, the overall intensity of the winter chill is not expected to decrease. The lowest temperature in the country today was recorded at $7^\circ\text{C}$. The weather office confirmed that all districts within the Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions—totaling 16 districts—are currently experiencing the cold wave. Additionally, it is sweeping over eight other districts, including Gopalganj, Moulvibazar, Cumilla, Feni, Khulna, Jashore, Chuadanga, and Kushtia. In total, 24 districts remain under the grip of the cold wave, down from 44 districts yesterday. The BMD’s 120-hour forecast predicts partly cloudy skies and dry weather nationwide. Moderate to thick fog may occur from midnight until morning, potentially lasting until noon in some areas. While night temperatures may rise slightly, day temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged.
