‘Khaleda Zia Holds a Prestigious Place in History’: UN Chief Antonio Guterres

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed profound grief over the passing of former Bangladesh Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, stating that she occupies a "prestigious and distinguished position" in the nation’s political history.

The UN chief conveyed his condolences in a formal message sent to Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's Interim Government. The Chief Adviser's press wing released the message on Wednesday (January 7).

A Legacy of Leadership In his message, dated January 2, Guterres noted, "I am deeply saddened by the death of the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Begum Khaleda Zia." He highlighted her historic achievement as the country's first female Prime Minister, emphasizing that her decades of public service and leadership have left a significant and lasting impact on the nation’s political landscape.

Global Condolences The Secretary-General extended his heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the United Nations to the people of Bangladesh and the bereaved family members. "During this time of mourning, I express my deepest empathy to the family, the government, and the citizens of Bangladesh," the message read.

Begum Khaleda Zia, widely recognized for her "uncompromising leadership" in the struggle for democracy, passed away on December 30, 2025, at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was laid to rest with state honors on December 31 at the Zia Udyan, beside the grave of her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman.
